On Tuesday evening, a missile strike attributed to Russia hit a military training unit in Ukraine, resulting in numerous casualties among servicemen. According to statements from the Ukrainian ground forces, three personnel were confirmed deceased while 18 sustained injuries from the attack, although specifics regarding the training site location were not disclosed. However, war correspondent Andrei Taplienko suggested the incident occurred in the Chernihiv region, located north of Kyiv and adjacent to the borders with Russia and Belarus.
The Russian Ministry of Defence (MOD), in response to the incident, publicly released a video allegedly depicting the missile assault, which involved an Iskander ballistic missile launching over 20 cluster-type explosions in a forested area. The authenticity of the footage is yet to be validated, but the Russian MOD claimed the casualty count on the Ukrainian side was significantly higher than that reported by Kyiv's military officials. As of now, Ukraine's armed forces have not provided any updates since the initial reports late Tuesday.
Acknowledging the unfortunate circumstances, the Ukrainian ground forces shared a statement on social media indicating that “despite the security measures taken, it was not possible to completely avoid losses among the personnel.” This incident marks the third occurrence of a Russian attack on a military training facility within a span of just over two months. In May, six servicemen lost their lives during a strike in the Sumy region, while another assault the following month resulted in 12 fatalities and around 60 injuries.
Given the heightened risks associated with safeguarding troops during training exercises, Ukraine's military leadership has expressed intentions to investigate the potential shortcomings in official actions that may have led to this latest tragedy. Notably, the commander of Ukraine's ground forces, Mykhailo Drapatyi, resigned after last month’s attack, which he described as resulting in the deaths of "young guys from a training battalion," many of whom were reportedly in shelters when the missile hit.
