Hamas Maintains Stance on Disarmament Amid Ongoing Ceasefire Talks

Hamas insists on retaining its weapons until a Palestinian state is recognized.

This article covers Hamas's refusal to disarm and the ongoing international negotiations for peace amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Hamas has reiterated its position that it will not disarm unless an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital is established. The announcement comes in response to US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff’s comments suggesting that Hamas might agree to lay down its arms under certain conditions. Disarmament is a critical demand from Israel as ceasefire negotiations stall.

Recent discussions have seen increased pressure from Arab nations on Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza, coinciding with a rising number of countries, including France and Canada, announcing their intentions to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state. Meanwhile, the UK has stated it might follow suit if Israel does not meet specific conditions by September.

In its latest statement, Hamas maintained that it cannot abandon its right to self-defense and weaponry without achieving its goal of a fully sovereign Palestinian state. Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir of the Israel Defense Forces has warned there will be no pause in the conflict if negotiations fail to secure the release of hostages held by the group.

This past weekend, the family of hostages, including Evyatar David, decried the alleged mistreatment of hostages, calling for international intervention. The conditions within Gaza have drawn condemnation from UN agencies, which have reported man-made starvation conditions in the region while blaming Israel for restricting essential supplies, a claim Israel denies.

During his visit to the region, Witkoff met with the families of hostages in Tel Aviv, who expressed their anxiety and desperation. He emphasized that peace talks should prioritize the resolution of the conflict and the return of all hostages rather than pursuing incomplete solutions.

As the humanitarian crisis escalates, reports indicate that over 1,373 Palestinians have been killed while seeking food since late May, with the majority falling victim to violence near aid distribution points. In response to violence, Israel has claimed that Hamas’s actions have contributed to chaos around these sites.

The conflict erupted dramatically after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in significant casualties and a subsequent military campaign in Gaza. Current estimates report that more than 60,000 people have been killed in Gaza, with many succumbing to malnutrition in the humanitarian crisis.
