UN Calls for Investigation into India's Treatment of Rohingya Refugees

The United Nations seeks answers over disturbing reports of Rohingya refugees being forcibly deported by Indian authorities amid rising tensions with Pakistan.

Allegations against the Indian government include the inhumane expulsion of Rohingya refugees, with claims that some were cast into the Andaman Sea. This has sparked a UN investigation call for accountability and humane treatment of these vulnerable individuals.

The United Nations has recently urged an investigation into alarming allegations that Indian officials have forcibly rounded up Rohingya refugees and expelled them in an inhumane manner. Reports have surfaced indicating that some refugees were pushed into the Andaman Sea, effectively returning them to the dangers that they initially fled from in Myanmar. This situation echoes a larger crackdown by Indian authorities, coinciding with elevated tensions with neighboring Pakistan following accusations of Pakistan’s involvement in a terror attack resulting in numerous Indian casualties.

Tom Andrews, the U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, condemned these reports, emphasizing the outrageous nature of casting refugees into perilous waters. He has called upon the Indian government to clarify the events and to cease any life-threatening actions against Rohingya refugees. In his statement, he urged for humane treatment instead of repatriation to their original perilous conditions.

As the conflict with Pakistan escalates, officials in India have implemented punitive strategies, including the expulsion of Pakistani citizens and a crackdown on Muslim minorities within India. Thousands of individuals, many labeled as Rohingya or Bangladeshi illegal immigrants, have been rounded up by local authorities, particularly in states such as Gujarat and Rajasthan, perceived to harbor significant political implications under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.

The Indian government has not publicly addressed these serious allegations. As the situation develops, international communities are watching closely, emphasizing the need for respect and protection of human rights, especially for vulnerable refugee populations.
