Almost all passengers and crew aboard an Air India flight headed to London Gatwick Airport have tragically perished, with the airline confirming a death toll of 241. The flight, which took off from western India, was carrying a total of 242 individuals, comprising 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Local authorities also anticipate complications, as the aircraft went down in a crowded area of Ahmedabad. The sole survivor, British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh, sustained injuries and received medical treatment.
The confirmed casualties include the Nanabawa family from Gloucester—Akeel, his wife Hannaa, and their daughter Sara. The Gloucester Muslim Society expressed profound sorrow, extending heartfelt condolences to the family and their community.
Adam Taju, 72, and wife Hasina, 70, traveled with their son-in-law, Altafhusen Patel, all from London. The familial grief was palpable as their granddaughter, Ammaarah Taju, recounted her shock while at her parents' home in Blackburn.
Among the victims were Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, a married couple operating a spiritual wellness center in London. They were recorded on social media before boarding, sharing their excitement for their journey.
Ajay Kumar Ramesh was killed alongside his brother, survivor Vishwashkumar Ramesh, who assured family members he was recovering but was uncertain about his brother's fate.
Notably, Vijay Rupani, former chief minister of Gujarat, was also reported among the deceased. His leadership from 2016-2021 as a member of the BJP party marked significant political contributions in the region.
Additional tragic news came from family members of a cabin crew member, Singson, whose cousin, T. Thanglingo Haokip, expressed concern for her family, noting that she was the sole provider for them.
