In brief
An 11-year-old girl clung to tire tubes for three days after her migrant boat sank, sparking renewed attention to the perilous Mediterranean crossing faced by many.
The Mediterranean Sea continues to claim lives as migrants attempt perilous journeys to reach Europe. A poignant case unfolded recently when an 11-year-old girl from Sierra Leone was rescued after spending three days adrift on tire tubes amidst turbulent waters. Members of the non-governmental organization Compass Collective were en route to respond to another emergency when they first detected the girl’s cries for help. Clinging to her inner tubes, the young migrant shared that she originally departed with 44 others from the coast of Sfax, Tunisia, but tragically, their boat capsized, leaving her as the sole survivor of her group. During her rescue, which occurred around 03:20 AM local time, she was equipped with only a life jacket and two tire tubes around her waist. As reported by Compass Collective spokeswoman Katja Tempel, the girl had been in water teeming with waves reaching heights of 3.5 meters (approximately 11.5 feet) before she lost contact with the few others who had been with her. After being safely rescued, the girl was transferred to the island of Lampedusa, where she was able to walk and speak effectively, indicating that she was in a stable condition despite her traumatic experience. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has documented a harrowing trend, revealing that over 30,000 migrants have died or gone missing while attempting to cross the Mediterranean in the last decade alone. Italy has received the majority of these migrants, with over 63,000 arriving this year, according to the UN refugee agency, UNHCR. The current wave of arrivals has seen a slight decrease, which many attribute to the restrictive policies enacted by Italy's right-wing government under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. As the world watches, the struggle for safe passage and humane treatment for migrants continues to be a pressing issue, particularly in light of events such as this young girl's survival against the odds.
