In brief

The violent storms, which struck over the weekend, unleashed nearly 40 tornadoes across several southern states, leading to significant property damage and leaving tens of thousands without electricity. The National Weather Service reported that Mississippi bore the brunt of the destruction, with two confirmed deaths occurring there, while one fatality was reported in Texas and another in North Carolina. Reports indicate that as of Monday morning, around 32,000 residents were still experiencing power outages in Mississippi, down from a peak of approximately 100,000. In Texas, the Storm Prediction Center issued a rare "particularly dangerous situation" tornado watch, typically reserved for instances of imminent severe tornado activity. Velocity estimates indicated that tornadoes in Montgomery County reached wind speeds of up to 145 mph, resulting in extensive damage to about 300 structures, including 30 homes that were completely destroyed. The situation remains dire, as this year has seen an exceptional spike in tornado occurrences nationwide, with a total of 1,762 reported through November — the highest number since 2011.

As recovery efforts continue in affected areas, officials remain on high alert for potential further severe weather incidents.
