South Korean e‑commerce giant Coupang Inc. announced on November 4 that its third‑quarter earnings had swung from a profit to a loss, recording a net deficit of 715.1 billion won (about US$501 million). The decline was driven largely by costs incurred after a fire at a fulfillment center in Incheon in July, and compounded by the lingering fallout from a 2025 data‑breach that exposed the personal information of more than 37 million customers.

In spite of the loss, the company’s total sales grew 11 % from 12.85 trillion won in the same period last year, reaching 14.22 trillion won. The Product Commerce segment—Coupang’s core online‑shopping business—posted revenue of 11.95 trillion won, up 8 % from the year‑ago period. Development offerings, which encompass operations in Taiwan and the Coupang Eats food‑delivery service, increased 27 % to 2.27 trillion won.

Active customers in the Product Commerce segment rose 2 % to 25.2 million, indicating that the company was still able to maintain growing user engagement even as it dealt with operational disruptions.

Coupang also disclosed that it had repurchased 210 million US dollars of its own shares during the quarter, following board approval of a one‑billion‑dollar share‑buyback program earlier that year.

Financial Impact of the Incheon Warehouse Fire

The blaze at a Coupang Fulfillment Center (FC) in Incheon, about 30 kilometers west of Seoul, began in July and became the second‑longest‑lasting warehouse fire reported in South Korea. It followed the 2021 incident at a distribution center in Icheon, which burned for roughly 130 hours. While the exact amount of the fire‑related expenses was not detailed in the press release, Yonhap reported that the overall net loss including those costs was 715.1 billion won. Excluding the fire‑related expenses, the company’s net loss would still have been 458.2 billion won.

Operating expenses rose to 642.3 billion won, a sharp reversal from an operating profit of 224.5 billion won in the same quarter of 2025. The jump in operating loss underscores how the fire not only disrupted inventory flows but also imposed additional labor, insurance, and logistical costs on the company’s profitability.

Broader Context: Data Breach Fallout and Customer Trust

In November 2025, Coupang disclosed a data breach that impacted over 37 million customers. The breach exposed personal data, triggering a public backlash and necessitating additional security investments. Though the company’s sales remained robust, the data‑breach fallout has been a significant drag on earnings, amplifying the hit from the warehouse fire.

Regulators have increased scrutiny over the firm’s data protection practices in the wake of the breach, and employees have reported heightened customer complaints. This environment of heightened regulatory pressure, combined with the physical disruptions from the fire, created a double‑torpedo effect on the company’s earnings trajectory.

Looking ahead, investors will likely focus on how the company mitigates future operational risks, such as implementing robust fire‑safety protocols across its fulfillment network and strengthening its cyber‑security architecture to regain consumer confidence.

Despite the latest quarterly loss, Coupang’s continuing growth in sales and user base suggests that the underlying business model remains sound. However, the vested cost of external shocks may test the company’s resilience and its ability to translate revenue growth into profitability in the interim.
