Zimbabwean footballer Divine Lunga has survived a gun attack in Johannesburg, according to South African police.
The star, 31, was driving in the inner‑city suburb of Hillbrow on Sunday when an unknown gunman fired at his car. Lunga, who represents both the Zimbabwe national squad and South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, escaped the attack without injury.
Crime remains a major issue in South Africa, and the country has one of the world’s highest murder rates. Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said investigators were looking into a case of attempted murder but were not yet ready to arrest anyone.
According to the local paper The Citizen, Lunga was heading to church with his younger brother when the gunfire erupted. The duo were mistaken for undercover officers by the suspect, who opened fire on their vehicle while they drove through Hillbrow.
Lunga’s safe exit from the incident brings a temporary relief to his fans and underscores the pressing need for increased security measures around the city’s popular routes.
