In brief

In a stunning example of economic revitalization, the Membertou First Nation in Nova Scotia demonstrates how strategic investments can dramatically turn around a community's fortunes, led by long-serving chief Terry Paul.

After embarking on a picturesque drive through Cape Breton Island, I arrived at the Membertou First Nation, guided by the community’s impressive achievements in the seafood industry. Under the leadership of Chief Terry Paul, who has been re-elected for his 40th consecutive year, Membertou made headlines in 2021 with a landmark investment that marked the largest by Indigenous groups in Canada's seafood sector. The coalition, formed alongside other First Nation groups, acquired a 50 percent stake in Clearwater Seafoods, valued at 1 billion Canadian dollars. This acquisition is a game changer for the community, instilling a sense of pride and belonging among its members. Recently, Membertou expanded its reach further by partnering with another First Nation to acquire one of Canada’s oldest shipyards. These initiatives not only bolster the Membertou economy but also serve as a vehicle for cultural renewal, with increased graduation rates and active Mi’kmaq language revival projects. The community is reclaiming land, expanding its boundaries, and enhancing local infrastructure, previously seen as too risky for outside businesses to navigate.Upon arriving at Membertou, I was greeted by a welcoming sign amid the fog. It stood as a symbol of the community’s journey, embracing change while remaining deeply rooted in its heritage. The inspiring story of Membertou First Nation is a testament to how collective action and visionary leadership can reshape a community's trajectory, proving that with determination and unity, they can indeed welcome the world.
