In brief

Eoghan Daltun, a sculptor turned eco-activist, is on a mission to counter the ecological decline of Ireland by rewilding his farm in West Cork. Through dedication and a new perspective on land management, he aims to restore biodiversity and native forests, challenging the narrative that Ireland's lush landscape is inherently healthy.

In West Cork, Ireland, Eoghan Daltun's ambition to transform his farm into a vibrant rainforest reflects a larger struggle against the country's ecological crisis. Often dubbed the Emerald Isle for its lush greenery, the reality is far less optimistic. Daltun, who has made it his mission to rewild his 73 acres on the Beara Peninsula, argues that Ireland's perception as a green paradise masks a troubling truth—its environmental health has been rated as "poor" by the Environmental Protection Agency."So much of what we think we know about the environment here is misleading," Daltun remarked in a recent interview. Historical records indicate that Ireland was once heavily forested, with trees covering 80 percent of the land. Today, that figure has plummeted to just 11 percent, mostly comprising nonnative species like Sitka spruce. Native trees barely occupy a mere 1 percent of the landscape.Biodiversity is also at risk, with vast grasslands predominating over natural ecosystems, further exacerbating the issue. "These fields are biological deserts," Daltun lamented. He believes much of the blame for this environmental degradation cannot continue to be directed at colonial legacies, as Ireland has been independent for more than a century, yet the problems have only compounded.Through his writings, including "An Irish Atlantic Rainforest" and the recently published "The Magic of an Irish Rainforest," Daltun invites others to join him in the effort to revive native flora and fauna and rethink land-use practices that have led to ecological desolation. By sharing his journey and highlighting the importance of preserving the last vestiges of natural habitats, Daltun hopes to inspire a movement toward more sustainable and regenerative practices across the Emerald Isle.
