In brief

Transnistria, a breakaway region of Moldova, is reeling from power shortages and a humanitarian crisis as it grapples with the cessation of Russian natural gas supplies.

Transnistria, a self-proclaimed independent region located between Moldova and Ukraine, is in the throes of a severe energy crisis after Moscow abruptly halted gas supplies on January 1. This disruption followed Ukraine's decision not to renew a gas transit agreement with Russia, leaving Transnistria reliant on antiquated infrastructure for power and heat. With no gas available for heating and cooking, the residents resorted to electric heaters, quickly overloading the fragile Soviet-era electricity grid. By January 7, the authorities had to implement extensive power cuts, limiting electricity to just eight hours a day. This precarious situation has not only left homes cold but has also interrupted essential water supply services, compounding the growing humanitarian concerns in the region. The festive Orthodox Christmas celebrations earlier this week turned somber for many. While regional president Vadim Krasnoselsky urged citizens to maintain hope, his message of resilience contrasts sharply with the stark realities on the ground. The leader accused the Moldovan government of attempting to “strangle” the breakaway region by refusing to offer assistance during this crisis.Moldova's Prime Minister, Dorin Recean, confirmed that assistance had been offered but was turned down by Transnistria's authorities, highlighting complex political tensions. While some residents cling to their Russian identity and allegiance, the region's future remains uncertain as it navigates this period of acute resource shortage amid geopolitical strife.
