In brief
Turkish police raided the Istanbul HQ of pro‑opposition channel Halk TV, suspending live broadcasts and appointing a new manager. The raid, involving 17 arrest warrants against owners, is part of a broader crackdown on media critical of President Erdoğan. Halk TV is closely allied with the Republican People’s Party (CHP), the main opposition group. Recent judicial moves that removed CHP leadership and the incarceration of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu underscore a tightening of political dissent. The incident raises serious concerns over press freedom and democratic space in Turkey.

The raid, said officials, was conducted by financial crimes police and led to 17 arrest warrants against individuals linked to the channel’s ownership.
Halk TV is closely aligned with the Republican People’s Party (CHP), the main opposition group, and has frequently criticized President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling AKP.
The move comes after a court recently removed CHP leadership and after Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu, viewed as Erdoğan’s chief political rival, has been imprisoned on corruption charges.
The incident adds to growing concerns over Turkey’s press freedom and the tightening grip of the government on dissenting voices.
