Swiss prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation against the managers of a bar in Crans-Montana, following a tragic fire that left 40 people dead and injured 119 others.
The couple, identified in media reports as Jacques and Jessica Moretti, are suspected of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence, according to Valais prosecutors.
Among the identified victims, eight were Swiss nationals. A preliminary investigation suggests the fire may have started due to sparklers being carried too close to the ceiling in the Le Constellation bar.
Beatrice Pilloud, the lead prosecutor, stated that investigators are also examining whether the venue's acoustic foam contributed to the fire's intensity and if it met safety regulations.
The bar, popular among young crowds, has left many families mourning the loss of their children, with a significant number of the deceased being teenagers. The identification of the victims has been complicated by the severity of their injuries.
The process of identification continues as authorities provide support to the grieving families, with a temporary helpline established for anxious relatives.
As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and addressing the safety measures in such venues to prevent future tragedies.
