WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A prearranged fight among teenagers escalated into a mass shooting at Leinbach Park on Monday morning, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries, according to local authorities.
The shooting unfolded around 10 a.m. near Jefferson Middle School, as reported by Winston-Salem police in a social media update. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed that several people were shot, with two succumbing to their injuries.
Winston-Salem police Assistant Chief Jason Swaim stated that the incident began when two juveniles agreed to meet at the park for a fight, during which a firearm was discharged, leading to multiple victims being shot. He also noted that many individuals were involved in the events, and the police are currently trying to ascertain their specific roles, whether as suspects, victims, or witnesses.
In response to the shooting, nearby schools were declared safe, and parents were allowed to pick up students from Jefferson Middle School as a precautionary measure.
