In brief

Hamas's recent announcement regarding the return of Shiri Bibas's body comes after Israeli officials declared that the remains handed over on Thursday were not hers, raising tension further amidst a fragile cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas.

Hamas announced on Friday that it has turned over a woman’s body to the Red Cross, which it believes belongs to Shiri Bibas, an Israeli mother who became a tragic symbol following her abduction along with her two young sons during an October 7, 2023 attack. The previous day, Israeli authorities had revealed that a body delivered by Hamas was incorrectly identified as Bibas's, prompting a rapid response from the militant group to rectify the situation. The International Committee of the Red Cross has not confirmed its involvement in this latest transfer of remains. The Israeli military is currently reviewing claims about this situation. Mousa Abu Marzouk, Hamas's head of foreign relations, stated that Friday's return marks their understanding that they have now provided the correct body of Bibas. Another unnamed official from the group echoed this sentiment, claiming the restitution was merely a part of ongoing negotiations. Israeli sources reported that Thursday’s exchange included the remains of four hostages—Bibas, her two children, Ariel and Kfir, and another individual, Oded Lifshitz, aged 83. The ceremony took place in Khan Younis, with the bodies displayed alongside photographs. However, shortly thereafter, Israeli investigators confirmed that one of the remains did not belong to Bibas. This prompted serious accusations from Israel, labeling the occurrence as a significant breach of the cease-fire guidelines.Hamas acknowledged the possibility of a mix-up in their initial handover, as intensifying tensions underscore the precarious nature of the ongoing cease-fire, which is due for review within weeks. Both factions are under pressure to restore trust as negotiations for an extension of the truce remain unresolved, with more exchanges anticipated in the coming days. This incident highlights the urgent complexity of the humanitarian crisis, as families grapple with pain and uncertainty, while political dynamics oscillate between conflict and resolution in the region.
