Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Moscow is prepared to provide uninterrupted shipments of fuel to India, as the country faces increased pressure from the United States to curb its purchases of Russian oil.
Speaking alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, Putin questioned why India should face repercussions for its oil purchases when the US continues to procure nuclear fuel from Russia.
US President Donald Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on many Indian products, claiming India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil contribute to funding the conflict in Ukraine—a charge that India disputes.
This dialogue takes place as the US seeks new peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, with Putin also suggesting a potential peaceful solution to the ongoing war while outlining Russia's demands concerning Ukrainian territories.
Modi reaffirmed India's position as not neutral in this conflict, emphasizing its commitment to peace and the need for stable relations with Russia. He pointed out that enhancing connectivity with Russia remains a critical priority.
As tensions rise between India and the US, Modi expressed concerns regarding the US tariffs, branding them as unfair and unjustified. In return, Putin noted that if the US can purchase nuclear fuel from Russia, India should be afforded the same opportunity.
Putin’s visit has led to the exchange of memorandums aimed at boosting cooperation in trade, agriculture, and nuclear energy. New visa schemes for Russian tourists and a Kremlin-funded news network in India were also announced.
Although no significant defense deals were made, both leaders discussed objectives to grow bilateral trade from $60 billion to $100 billion by 2030, acknowledging energy security as a vital component of their partnership.
Despite pressures, India continues to procure Russian oil, contributing significantly to its energy needs as global economic dynamics shift.
