A US lawmaker has made a direct plea to Sarah Ferguson to testify about her close personal and business ties to Jeffrey Epstein, according to a letter obtained by the BBC.
Congressman Suhas Subramanyam urged her to provide information to the US congressional committee investigating the late sex offender. He also asked for any knowledge she had of her ex-husband Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's involvement in Epstein's operations.
The letter represents the most significant pressure on the former duchess to testify since the Epstein scandal began.
Ferguson's representatives have been approached for comment. Mountbatten-Windsor has denied any wrongdoing concerning Epstein.
Mountbatten-Windsor has not responded to the BBC's requests for comment on allegations tied to the release of numerous Epstein files in January.
Last weekend, the BBC first reported that some US lawmakers were calling for Ferguson to provide evidence regarding her connections to Epstein.
Currently, there is no legal mechanism in place to compel the former duchess to testify in the US.
In the letter, sent to Ferguson on Thursday, Subramanyam emphasized that recently released Epstein files revealed her close personal and business ties with the American financier. He urged her cooperation, stating, As the committee seeks justice for the survivors of Mr Epstein's criminal enterprise... I respectfully request your cooperation with the committee's investigation.
The letter referred to an email from a Sarah describing Epstein as a legend, where she stated, I am at your service. Just marry me. It also alluded to communications suggesting that Ferguson directly sought financial assistance from Epstein.
The congressman expressed interest in learning more about Ferguson’s knowledge of her ex-husband's dealings with Epstein, arguing that her connections indicate she possesses crucial information that could help the investigation.
These revelations have intensified scrutiny on Ferguson, who has faced increased public and legal pressures following her association with Epstein.
Notably, her relationship with the financier has raised questions about her conduct and decisions during their friendship, as evidenced by various emails that reflect a personal affinity towards Epstein, even as he faced legal challenges.
Furthermore, Ferguson has faced significant fallout from her ties to Epstein, losing numerous charity affiliations and her honorary title in York. This escalating situation continues to unfold as public interest in Epstein's associates remains high.
