Norway's Crown Princess's Son Faces Verdict on Rape Charges

In the early hours of Monday, three Oslo District Court judges will announce the sentence for Marius Borg Høiby, 29, whose trial included 40 charges ranging from rape to drug trafficking.

Prosecutors are seeking seven years and seven months behind bars, while Høiby's defence team aims for roughly a year and a half. He will appear by video link because of health reasons and has remained in custody since February following police arrest over assault and restraining‑order violations.

The case also draws attention to Crown Princess Mette‑Marit, who is suffering from a serious lung condition and is on a transplant waiting list. Visits to her son are limited, and the princess’s health crisis has added an emotional dimension to the legal proceedings.

Public scrutiny has intensified since revelations emerged of the princess’s friendship with the disgraced Jeffrey Epstein. While sympathy has grown for the family, questions about the royal household’s reputation and the future of the monarchy persist.

The verdict will close the courtroom chapter but leave broader debates about the royal family's image and Norway's trust in its institutions open for debate.
