The hugely popular Labubu dolls will soon star in their own feature film, as announced by Chinese toy company Pop Mart and Sony Pictures.
The Labubu movie, which is in early development, will combine live-action and computer-generated animation, with Paul King, known for directing Wonka and Paddington, at the helm. While no release date has been set, the project marks a significant move for Pop Mart, a company that has seen its value soar to nearly $40 billion thanks to the success of the Labubu line.
Labubus have captivated a global audience, prompting Pop Mart's expansion beyond toy sales into ventures such as a theme park in Beijing. The decision to develop a film is seen as a natural progression as the Labubu brand gains traction in the entertainment sector.
The Labubu phenomenon, which started from a series of blind box toys, resonates strongly with collectors and celebrities, including Rihanna and K-pop star Lisa from Blackpink, who have showcased their love for the dolls.
Created over a decade ago by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, Labubu is inspired by Nordic mythology and is part of the larger fantasy world featured in Lung’s book series. The film's announcement coincided with a global exhibition tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of Labubu, and it is an exciting opportunity for Pop Mart to transition into an entertainment brand.
Experts highlight that this move could create a seamless journey for Gen Z and Millennial consumers, intertwining content and commerce in a way that appeals to a modern audience.
