In brief

Zhang Yiming's remarkable wealth surge, attributed to TikTok's immense popularity, highlights the contrasting dynamics within China's tech sector, where many are facing declines amidst economic challenges.

Zhang Yiming, the co-founder of ByteDance, has been named the richest person in China as reported by the Hurun Research Institute, with a net worth of $49.3 billion (£38 billion). This figure marks a significant increase of 43% from the previous year, emphasizing the explosive growth of TikTok, a platform that has gained immense global traction despite geopolitical controversies. Although Zhang stepped down from his executive position in 2021, he remains a substantial shareholder, owning approximately 20% of the company. The escalating success of TikTok stands in stark contrast to growing concerns about its connections to the Chinese government. While ByteDance and TikTok maintain their independence from state influence, there are plans for a U.S. ban effective January 2025 unless the company divests or sells the app. This external pressure has not hindered ByteDance’s financial performance; the company's global profits surged by 60% last year, significantly benefiting Zhang Yiming's wealth.Rupert Hoogewerf, head of the Hurun, noted that Zhang is the 18th individual to hold the top spot in China's rich list over just 26 years, compared to a much slower pace in the U.S., where only four figures—Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk—have reigned as wealthiest individuals. This discrepancy illustrates the rapid evolution of fortunes within China’s dynamic economic landscape.Zhang Yiming is not alone; several other tech magnates appear in the rankings. Pony Ma, the founder of Tencent, ranks third with an estimated wealth of £44.4 billion. However, this surge in wealth for Zhang and some within the tech sector is notable against a backdrop of broader economic struggles. The Hurun report highlights a 12% decline in representation on the list, with the number of billionaires falling below 1,100 for the first time.Overall, only about 30% of individuals on the list experienced an increase in net worth, underscoring the uneven nature of China’s economic recovery. Shifts in market conditions have specifically affected sectors like green energy and solar manufacturing, where developers struggled due to growing competition and market saturation. Tightened tariffs and regulations have led to substantial declines in wealth, with solar panel makers reporting decreases as drastic as 80% from their peak in 2021. In contrast, companies like Xiaomi have seen increased fortunes through the smartphone market despite these challenges.
