Police in South Africa have launched a manhunt following a mass shooting that killed 12 residents in an informal settlement in Johannesburg.
At least ten suspects, armed with rifles, entered the Jumpers informal settlement late on Tuesday and opened fire before fleeing in a white vehicle.
The attacks resulted in eight men and three women dying on scene, with a ninth victim later succumbing to his injuries in hospital; nine others were admitted to hospitals with gunshot wounds.
Investigators say the motive remains unclear, but they are considering a possible link to illegal mining turf wars, an issue tied to the region’s high firearm proliferation.
The incident underscores the growing violence in informal settlements and the unlicensed weapon problem that fuels such tragedies in South Africa.
