Background of the Bust
Europol said that a cross‑border criminal network involved in the transportation of synthetic drugs, firearms, and migrants has been neutralised. The operation involved 78 arrests in Spain and Algeria and was part of a larger focus on the western Mediterranean smuggling routes.
Scope of the Network
The group supplied pollutants and guns from Spain and Portugal to Algerian hubs, then used the same maritime veins to funnel migrants and explosives back to the Spanish mainland, notably Ibiza. Operatives operated 18 high‑speed prototypes for rapid transfers, the so‑called “ghost speedboats” that evade registration and detection under Spanish law.
Arrests and Seizures
Law‑enforcement teams conducted searches at 17 sites across Spain, including in Alicante, Almería, Cartagena and Murcia. The chief confiscations included 15,000 MDMA tablets, more than €25,000 in cash, firearms and over €5 million worth of vessels. Additional technical assets seized were satellite phones, GPS trackers, encrypted comms and satellite dishes.
Humanitarian Impact
Investigators estimate that up to 50 migrants can be smuggled per journey, with charges reaching €12,000 per person. It has been reported that migrant carriers were kept in overcrowded boats lacking lights and life‑jackets, under harsh weather, and subjected to assaults and inhuman housing conditions.
International Links
Suspects were largely of Algerian origin and displayed clear ties to criminal outfits in France, Belgium, Portugal, Italy and Poland, showing that the operation was part of a broader European crime syndicate.
