In brief
Efforts continue to locate missing individuals after a tourist vessel sank in the Red Sea, affecting nationals from multiple countries with search teams focusing on the wreckage site.
In a tragic incident off the coast of Marsa Alam, Egypt, a tourist boat carrying 44 people sank on Monday, resulting in ongoing rescue operations by local authorities. As of Tuesday evening, five survivors have been successfully found, with four bodies also recovered, while seven individuals remain unaccounted for. Reports indicate that among the missing, two are British nationals. The modern four-deck vessel, named Sea Story, was reportedly struck by a significant wave during rough weather conditions, leading to its rapid capsize. Distress calls were made around 05:30 local time. Witnesses stated that the boat sank within just five to seven minutes, severely hampering escape efforts for some passengers who were trapped in their cabins. The Red Sea governor, Maj-Gen Amr Hanafi, confirmed that military personnel and other passing tourist boats successfully rescued 28 individuals shortly after the incident. Currently, the search continues in the Wadi el-Gemal area, with authorities working diligently to locate the remaining missing persons. The Sea Story was on a five-day diving excursion that began on Sunday, aiming to conclude in the town of Hurghada. Experts predict that the vessel encountered high winds and substantial wave activity, with the Egyptian Meteorological Authority having warned of hazardous sea conditions in the preceding days. Reported wind speeds reached 37-43 mph (60-70 km/h) with wave heights of three to four meters (10-13 feet).Among the 44 passengers were tourists from multiple countries including Belgium, China, Finland, Germany, and the U.S. With two Polish tourists and one Finnish national also reported missing, government bodies are actively notifying the families of those affected. The UK Foreign Office is providing assistance to British nationals involved in the incident, while the Chinese embassy confirmed that two of its citizens were rescued unharmed.Despite the tragedy, Red Sea governor Maj-Gen Hanafi reassured that the rescued individuals are in good health and receiving care at a local tourist hotel. The Sea Story, owned by an Egyptian entrepreneur, had undergone safety inspections and was deemed fit for travel. The vessel, built in 2022, includes 18 cabins and boasts a maximum capacity of 36 passengers. This unfortunate event echoes a previous maritime disaster in the region last year, when three British tourists lost their lives due to a fire on another dive boat. As investigators work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the Sea Story, the focus remains on providing support to the victims' families and ensuring safety measures in the future.
