Head teacher’s swift decision saved 900 students as Nepal floods surged

In the Nuwakot district, a tragedy turned into a near-miracle when head teacher Rajendra Dawadi rushed 900 pupils to higher ground just ten minutes before a devastating flood swallowed the Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School.

The teacher received four emergency calls at 09:10 local time, each warning of an imminent disaster, and chose to evacuate without delay, ordering buses to reverse and directing students toward the safest routes.

An eight‑pass‑teenager, Yunisha Amatya, later recounted fleeing a few seconds before the waters surged, and parents were reunited after frantic phone calls.

The incident has highlighted the need for improved warning systems such as sirens and clear evacuation protocols to prevent similar loss of life in the future.
