Kathryn Ruemmler, a top lawyer at Goldman Sachs, announced her resignation amid ongoing scrutiny of her ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein. Emails released by U.S. authorities revealed that she referred to Epstein as 'Uncle Jeffrey,' and had advised him on handling media criticism while accepting lavish gifts from him.
In her resignation statement, Ruemmler stressed, 'My responsibility is to put Goldman Sachs' interests first.' The resignation will take effect on June 30, with Goldman CEO David Solomon expressing gratitude for her guidance. While her involvement with Epstein stirred public relations challenges for Goldman, Ruemmler maintained that she was unaware of Epstein's criminal activities.
Ruemmler, who held significant positions, including White House counsel under President Barack Obama, joined Goldman in 2020. The revelations regarding her relationship with Epstein, documented through extensive email exchanges from 2014 to 2019, have prompted her exit from the firm.
During her tenure, Ruemmler was responsible for leading the reputational risk committee but faced mounting pressure as further disclosures about Epstein emerged. Solomon honored her contributions while acknowledging the difficulties the firm has faced due to these events.
As the Epstein case continues to unravel, Ruemmler's resignation marks a significant moment in the corporate fallout linked to the scandal, echoing similar exits in the legal and business sectors.
