In brief
On the anniversary of the tragedy, six individuals connected to a human trafficking operation have been apprehended as investigations continue.
On December 9, 2021, a tragic traffic accident involving a truck transporting migrants near Tuxtla Gutiérrez in Chiapas, southern Mexico, claimed the lives of more than 50 individuals, with many being from Guatemala. As investigations into this deadly incident proceed, U.S. and Guatemalan law enforcement have arrested six suspects connected to a human trafficking ring responsible for this catastrophe. The truck flipped over on a sharp curve while carrying around 160 migrants, ultimately crashing into a pedestrian bridge and various constructions. The impact resulted in over 100 injuries, marking it as one of the worst such incidents in recent history. On the third anniversary of the fatal event, authorities in Guatemala, acting on a request from the United States, detained four individuals linked to the smuggling operation: Tomas Quino Canil, Alberto Marcario Chitic, Oswaldo Manuel Zavala Quino, and Josefa Quino Canil De Zavala. A fifth individual, Jorge Agapito Ventura, was arrested at his residence in Cleveland, Texas. In addition to these five, another unnamed suspect was also taken into custody as part of the operation. The arrests were made following an indictment from the Southern District of Texas, charging the Guatemalans with conspiracy to illegally transport undocumented migrants to the U.S., which resulted in severe injury and loss of life. This development underscores the ongoing challenges surrounding migrant smuggling and trafficking in the region.
