Salah Sarsour, the president of Wisconsin’s largest mosque, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, leading to significant backlash from local officials and community leaders. This incident has been interpreted by many as an infringement on free speech and politically motivated due to Sarsour's vocal criticism of Israel.
The 53-year-old Sarsour, who was born in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and has lived in the United States for over 30 years, was surrounded by federal agents after leaving his home in Milwaukee.
His attorneys have claimed that he was deemed a foreign policy threat without substantive evidence, a claim that they argue lacks merit. They suggest that Sarsour was targeted for his public opposition to Israeli policies and his past conviction by Israeli military courts.
Sarsour has been a notable figure in advocating for social justice and has served as the board president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, known for his community engagement over the past five years. His supporters have rallied to demand his release, stating that his arrest appears to be an attempt to suppress the Palestinian narrative.
Accompanied by a diverse group of religious leaders and local influencers, supporters gathered at a news conference, urging for justice and condemning the actions of immigration authorities as politically motivated. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson also criticized the detention, labeling it an overreach by ICE.
Currently, Sarsour is being held in a county jail in Indiana while his attorneys pursue legal avenues for his release, emphasizing his commitment to remain in the U.S. and continue his community work amidst these challenges.
