Christa Pike, 50, who is serving a death sentence for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer, is reportedly awake, speaking and conscious following a second lethal‑injection attempt that botched during execution.

According to a statement released by her attorneys, Pike is receiving intensive medical care while handcuffed at a Nashville, Tennessee, hospital. The doctors cleared her and administered additional supportive measures after the pentobarbital injected in the failed execution was removed from her system.

The incident marks the second unsuccessful execution for Pike; an earlier attempt also went awry, leaving her unconscious and requiring rescue by medical staff.

Legal representatives have called for a thorough review of the death‑penalty protocols used in Pike’s case, citing concerns about the reliability of the lethal‑injection system. They also highlighted the urgent need to balance due process with humane treatment for inmates.
