Washington, D.C. - U.S. attorney Jeanine Pirro announced today that charges against Rahmanullah Lakanwal have been upgraded to first-degree murder, following the death of a National Guard member.
The current charges stem from an ambush-style shooting that occurred on Wednesday, during which Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe sustained serious injuries. Unfortunately, Beckstrom has since succumbed to her wounds.
Pirro noted that Lakanwal is now facing several charges, including one count of first-degree murder, three counts of possession of a firearm during a violent crime, and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. The attack was characterized as an ambush that used a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver, but officials have not yet determined a motive.
Lakanwal, 29, was originally from Afghanistan and reportedly served in a CIA-backed military unit before immigrating to the U.S. He entered the country under the Operation Allies Welcome program, designed to assist Afghan allies after the U.S. withdrawal.
This development has enraged local and national communities, prompting further investigations into Lakanwal’s background and possible motivations for the attack.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and have assured the public that updates will follow as new information comes to light.
