A 65‑year‑old independent Member of Parliament, Helen Haines, was the victim of a deliberate road‑side assault near her Wangaratta office on Monday, resulting in the loss of both legs and a critical hospital admission.

Emergency responders air‑lifted the MP to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital. In a 6‑hour update on Saturday, the hospital confirmed that Haines’s condition had shifted from critical to serious but stable.

The 43‑year‑old suspect, Brendan Nugent, was taken into custody a few minutes after the incident and now faces three charges: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentional causing serious injury, and harm to a Commonwealth public official. Police say additional charges such as attempted murder may be filed.

Investigators are examining whether alcohol or medication influenced the driver’s actions, while the motive remains unknown. Haines’s husband, Phil, described the event as a “horrendous incident” and stressed that his wife’s mental and physical health are good.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on national discourse, noting an increase in heated public debate. Haines, known for her climate‑action advocacy, entered parliament in 2019 after a career as a nurse and midwife.
