In brief

Ukraine executed a substantial drone assault across Russia, primarily hitting the Moscow region, as tensions heighten around impending cease-fire discussions. This attack marks a significant blow to Moscow, prompting immediate airport shutdowns and inflicting civilian casualties, illustrating the ongoing volatility in the conflict.

Ukraine has escalated its military engagement by launching one of its most extensive drone attacks early Tuesday, aiming at various locations in Russia, particularly the Moscow region. This attack, characterized as the most significant since the war began, coincides with heightened military activity from both sides as they gear up for talks aimed at resolving the prolonged conflict. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported the destruction of 337 drones, with approximately 91 specifically directed at the capital and surrounding areas. Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed that the recent strikes resulted in tragic losses with at least two people dead and 14 injured, alongside damage to residential infrastructure. Notably, a drone's impact left a residential building in ruins, causing a damaged roof during the nighttime assault. The repercussions of the drone strikes were swift, as all international airports in the Moscow metropolitan area—serving a substantial population of 21 million—were compelled to suspend operations temporarily due to safety concerns. In light of the escalating violence, Ukraine has put forth a proposal for an immediate aerial cease-fire, pledging to halt long-range attacks into Russian territory if Moscow agrees to reciprocate. This initiative has garnered support from several European nations, including France, and is viewed as a potential confidence-building measure leading to broader peace negotiations. The war has already resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with estimates exceeding a million Ukrainian and Russian troops either killed or injured since the start of hostilities.
