South Africa's Police Minister Suspended Amid Serious Organized Crime Allegations

President Cyril Ramaphosa places Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on leave following allegations of corruption and organized crime links, launching a judicial investigation.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu amid allegations of involvement in organized crime and corruption. Mchunu denies wrongdoing as a judicial commission is set to investigate these claims, which raise serious concerns for national security.

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa has taken decisive action by placing Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on an immediate "leave of absence" due to serious allegations linking him to organized crime. This announcement, made during a live televised address on Sunday, also included the establishment of a judicial commission to thoroughly investigate the disturbing claims, which Ramaphosa stated undermine the nation’s constitution and pose a threat to national security.

Mchunu has publicly refuted all allegations, asserting that he is "ready to respond" to the charges against him. These accusations include alleged interference in investigations relating to political killings and corruption within law enforcement, prompting Ramaphosa to call for a swift and comprehensive investigation. The commission will be chaired by the deputy chief justice and will also scrutinize current and former police officials, as well as members of the national executive.

The situation has escalated public calls for action, particularly as Mchunu holds a significant position within the African National Congress (ANC) party and is considered a potential candidate for leadership in the upcoming ANC elective conference in 2027. In his response, Mchunu expressed his respect for the president’s decision and reiterated his commitment to uphold honor and integrity.

The serious allegations against Mchunu were initially brought to light by KwaZulu-Natal provincial police chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused the minister of receiving financial backing from a questionable businessman to support his political aspirations. Mkhwanazi revealed that sensitive investigations into the killings of politicians were reportedly suspended under Mchunu’s directive and that a concerning number of case files were removed without proper authorization.

Furthermore, Mkhwanazi highlighted ties between Mchunu and a businessman linked to a drug cartel syndicate, pointing to a canceled lucrative police contract after the individual’s arrest for attempted murder. This investigation illuminates the complex and troubling connections between organized crime and high-profile political figures in South Africa, spurring calls for accountability and transparency in the nation’s governance.
