Muhammadu Buhari: A Controversial Legacy of Leadership in Nigeria

Former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 82, leaving behind a complex legacy shaped by military rule, democratic reinvention, and economic struggles.

Buhari, who ruled Nigeria from 1983 to 1985 and served as president from 2015 until recently, is remembered for his anti-corruption stance and efforts to combat insecurity, though his tenure faced significant challenges including economic downturns and social unrest.

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 in a London medical facility, following his travel to the UK for a routine check-up in April. Buhari, a former military dictator who later transitioned to a civilian leadership role, faced significant challenges during his presidency and often struggled to fulfill the promises of change he made to the Nigerian populace.

A figure often described as austere and detached from the electorate, Buhari was nonetheless noted for his commitment to personal integrity, a characteristic appreciated in a political landscape often marred by corruption. His notable political journey began with three unsuccessful attempts before he finally secured a significant victory in the 2015 elections, making history as the first opposition leader to defeat an incumbent since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. He was re-elected in 2019 for another term. During his presidency, Buhari garnered support particularly from the impoverished northern regions of Nigeria, who viewed his military background as beneficial in tackling the pressing issues of insurgency and governance.

Buhari’s administration was marked by fluctuating global oil prices which coincided with Nigeria's most severe economic crisis in recent memory. His promises to combat Boko Haram, an Islamist militant organization that continued to pose a threat, and to ameliorate youth unemployment, mostly remained unmet. Under his leadership, there was a notable increase in violence, with armed conflict often erupting between herders and farmers.

Buhari's childhood was spent in Daura, Katsina state, where his life was marked by the early death of his father. His military career commenced shortly after Nigeria gained independence, leading to a rapid ascent that earned him the role of military governor and later oil minister before taking power as a military ruler in a coup. This period, lasting from 1983 to 1985, was characterized by his regime’s stringent anti-corruption measures, which were met with both acclaim and criticism for human rights abuses.

Post-military rule, Buhari's attempt to transition to democracy was viewed with skepticism by some who remembered his earlier governance style. His elected tenure was often associated with economic hardship, prominently underscored by a drastic increase in rice prices attributed to trade restrictions aimed at fostering local agriculture. The administration’s fallacies became evident through public outcries as food insecurity soared.

His presidency has left a divisive legacy, with supporters praising his fight against corruption while detractors criticized his slow response to crises and perceived ineffectiveness. As Buhari stepped down, discussions around his successor and political maneuvering, including controversial economic policies, underscored the contention surrounding his administration.

Though Buhari was intent on portraying himself as a reformist leader in his transition from military to civilian life, he faced ongoing critiques regarding his governance approach and transparency, particularly concerning his own declining health. His family, including his second wife Aisha, and his ten children survive him as Nigeria reflects on the impact of his leadership in shaping contemporary political discourse.
