Deadly Russian Airstrike Hits Ukrainian Prison, Escalating Conflict
An overnight airstrike in Zaporizhzhia kills 16 inmates and injures over 30, prompting international condemnation.
In a troubling escalation of hostilities, a Russian airstrike hit a prison located in the southeastern region of Ukraine known as Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 30 others. This attack occurred overnight and was confirmed by Ukrainian officials. According to Ivan Fedorov, the regional leader of Zaporizhzhia, the strike involved at least eight high-explosive aerial glide bombs and also caused damage to nearby residential areas.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, condemned the assault, labeling it as "another war crime" perpetrated by Russian forces. The Zaporizhzhia region has been under frequent attack since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, despite being largely controlled by Ukrainian forces.
Fedorov noted that multiple buildings within the prison were destroyed, although specific details regarding the exact location remain undisclosed. The Ukrainian human rights commissioner has condemned the airstrike as a blatant violation of humanitarian law, asserting that individuals in detention still retain their right to life and must be protected.
In a related development, former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a formidable ultimatum to the Kremlin, stating that Russia has "about 10 or 12 days" to agree to a ceasefire or face severe economic sanctions. He suggested he would disclose further details soon. Earlier in July, Trump had set a 50-day deadline for negotiations, yet the ongoing strikes have shown no signs of abating.
Additionally, reports emerged of further casualties resulting from missile and drone attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where a strike on Kamyanske resulted in two fatalities and five injuries. Several other attacks across multiple districts have also resulted in loss of life.
In a retaliatory claim, Russian officials reported that Ukrainian drones launched strikes in the Rostov region, resulting in at least one death, further exacerbating tensions across the border. As confrontations continue to spiral, the urgency for a resolution becomes increasingly critical.
