Thailand and Cambodia to Hold Peace Talks in Malaysia After Border Conflicts
Intervention by US President Trump Sparks Negotiations Following 4-Day Fighting
Thailand and Cambodia are set to engage in peace negotiations in Malaysia on Monday following four days of intense fighting along their border that has resulted in at least 33 fatalities among soldiers and civilians, while thousands have been displaced. The agreement to convene is a direct outcome of US President Donald Trump's diplomatic outreach, where he urged both sides for an immediate ceasefire during phone calls on Saturday.
Thailand is represented by its acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who confirmed their participation after Malaysia indicated that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet would attend the talks as well. Amid ongoing violations and escalations, Trump's intervention appears crucial in stabilizing the situation. As the US government has imposed a 36% trade tariff on goods from both Thailand and Cambodia, Trump has stated that future trade discussions are contingent on halting hostilities.
François, a political analyst, remarked, "Trump’s strong stance seems to have motivated both countries to come to the table." Although Cambodia had previously proposed a ceasefire, it now appears that Trump's pressures might facilitate a more formal dialogue. Thailand remains cautious, insisting that discussions regarding a ceasefire must precede any peace arrangement, despite recognizing the urgent need for dialogue.
Further complicating matters, both nations have exchanged accusations regarding who instigated the recent conflict, with Thailand citing Cambodian surveillance drone activities as the initial provocation and Cambodia alleging Thai military invasions near sacred sites. This long-standing territorial dispute harks back over a century, rooted in the post-colonial border delineation following French rule in Cambodia.
As the two countries prepare for talks, the situation remains tense. However, there is cautious optimism, especially following both the acknowledgment of Trump's role and the expressed willingness from both nations for a ceasefire.
