In the wake of escalating border clashes, Trump pushes for a ceasefire and emphasizes the importance of resuming trade talks.
Former President Donald Trump has recently called on Thailand and Cambodia to halt their ongoing conflict that has escalated since late July. While visiting his golf courses in Scotland, Trump announced his discussions with the leaders of both countries on Truth Social, emphasizing the need for an "immediate ceasefire" and the ultimate goal of "PEACE!".
He highlighted the urgency of resolving the situation, pointing out that at least 33 troops and civilians have lost their lives and that thousands of people have been displaced due to the ongoing tensions.
In his message, Trump revealed his anticipation to revive trade negotiations with both countries but noted that such discussions could only proceed once peaceful conditions are restored. Tensions have further intensified with impending U.S. tariffs set to take effect on August 1, imposing a 36% tax on imports from Cambodia and Thailand unless a resolution is reached.
On the same day, Cambodia’s leadership issued its own call for an immediate ceasefire, reflecting the nation’s desire to de-escalate the hostilities. Maris Sangiampongsa, Thailand’s foreign minister, stressed that genuine efforts from Cambodia to end the conflict are essential for any dialogue to occur.
While engaging in his golfing activities, Trump reiterated his conversations with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, firmly expressing his hope that peace would soon prevail in the region and trade agreements would follow suit once stability is achieved.
