In a harrowing discovery, a volunteer group searching for missing relatives in Mexico uncovered a site they describe as an "extermination camp" at an abandoned ranch near La Estanzuela, situated close to Guadalajara. The group had received a tip-off regarding a potential mass grave when they arrived at the location, revealing not just human remains but also three clandestine cremation ovens.
During their grim exploration, the volunteers stumbled upon hundreds of bone shards alongside personal items, including a distressing assortment of over 200 pairs of discarded shoes, a blue summer dress, a small pink backpack, and even notebooks—altogether amounting to more than 700 personal belongings, which provide a haunting glimpse into the potential toll of violence in the area. Decorative figurines of Santa Muerte, representing the Holy Death, were also found scattered throughout the site.
The Mexican authorities were alerted to the situation, subsequently discovering 96 shell casings and metal gripping rings at the ranch. However, details regarding the number of victims, the identities of the remains, or the duration of the camp's activities remain uncertain. As speculation mounts, the case has caught national attention, with the Attorney General’s Office now leading the investigation at the insistence of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
