Surge in Anti-Jewish Incidents Sparks Fear in Melbourne’s Jewish Community
Recent violent acts directed at a synagogue and an Israeli restaurant have led to heightened concerns among Melbourne's Jewish population.
Australia’s Jewish community is grappling with rising fears following two troubling incidents in Melbourne on Friday night. Reports confirm an arson attack at a synagogue and a chaotic scene at an Israeli restaurant, highlighting ongoing tensions and previous attacks against Jewish institutions.
Victorian police are investigating both incidents, which occurred around 8 p.m. and were approximately one mile apart. At the synagogue in East Melbourne, a man reportedly doused the front door with a flammable substance and ignited it while around 20 congregants were inside. Thankfully, everyone managed to evacuate safely, and firefighters contained the fire to the entrance with no reports of injuries or arrests.
Simultaneously, a group of approximately 20 protesters gathered nearby, where they were reported to have shouted distressing slogans at diners. This led to the arrest of one individual for obstructing police efforts at the scene. Local reports indicate that the protest resulted in overturned tables and a shattered window at the restaurant, although police have not confirmed the details behind the chants or extent of damages.
Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, condemned the incidents, emphasizing that their motivations were clearly malicious. The community's leaders echoed these sentiments, expressing deep concern over the safety of Jewish citizens following this latest wave of attacks.
