Tragedy Strikes Delhi Railway Station Amid Kumbh Mela Crowd Surge

Overcrowding at New Delhi Railway Station during a religious festival leads to a fatal crush, leaving 18 dead and many injured; families demand accountability.

A devastating incident at New Delhi Railway Station resulted in the deaths of 18 individuals due to a crowd crush, exacerbated by delays from trains heading to the Kumbh Mela festival. Eyewitness accounts highlight the chaos, while opposition leaders criticize the government's failure to manage the situation. Families of victims express profound grief and anger over the lack of timely assistance.

On Sunday morning, the New Delhi Railway Station bustled with the usual mix of excitement and impatience as passengers awaited their trains. Yet, the atmosphere turned tragic overnight, as a crowd crush—reportedly triggered by excessive overcrowding—resulted in at least 18 fatalities and numerous injuries. Officials indicated that the chaos emerged as two trains were delayed at the station, exacerbated by a third train scheduled to depart for Prayagraj city during the Kumbh Mela, a significant Hindu festival attracting vast crowds.

According to a statement from Indian Railways, the crush began after "a passenger slipped and fell on the stairs." Subsequently, opposition leaders condemned the government, accusing Indian Railways of inadequate crowd management. An investigation into the incident has commenced, and authorities have promised compensation for the deceased and injured. Pankaj Gangwar, Principal Chief Security Commissioner for Northern Railway, urged for patience while the investigation unravels the circumstances.

Tragic crowd crushes are a recurring issue in India, particularly during religious gatherings and festivals. Just last month, a similar incident at the Kumbh Mela led to the death of 30 individuals. The unexpected crowds at the railway station were not surprising; train travel remains the most economical long-distance option in India, often resulting in passenger numbers surpassing the trains' capacities.

In the wake of the disaster, witnesses and family members have shared their harrowing experiences. Many expressed outrage at the response, claiming that authorities were slow to act during the turmoil. Eyewitnesses recounted chaos on the overhead bridges, staircases, and platforms, as the overwhelming crowd surged forward. Bipin Jha, whose wife Mamta perished in the upheaval, relived the moment she was taken from him, stating he would carry the guilt of not being able to save her.

Seema, who was also caught in the crush, described how a sudden push from behind sent her and many others tumbling down the stairs, leading to a struggle for air amid bodies. Others, like Usha Devi, felt the chaos escalate as people collapsed around her, even as she attempted to board her train.

Several victims’ relatives echoed Umesh Giri’s sentiments, who lost his wife, Shilam Devi. He described an "uncontrollable crowd" as he awaited news outside the mortuary. Help arrived too late, he insisted, despite his calls for assistance amidst the falling bodies.

Casualties were transported to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital, where mourners confronted the reality of their losses. Journalists faced barriers at the facility, while families complained about inadequate hospital conditions, alleging overcrowded treatment spaces. At Lady Hardinge Hospital, grief-stricken relatives collected the body of 7-year-old Riya, prompting her uncle to lament the tragic loss of a child in an avoidable disaster.

The incident at the New Delhi Railway Station serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the consequences when crowd management fails, especially during significant public events. Families mourn their loved ones amidst calls for deeper accountability from authorities.
