Indonesian Police Uncover Baby Trafficking Racket, Rescue Infants

Authorities arrest 13 suspects, revealing a syndicate selling babies to buyers in Singapore for up to £500.

A significant baby trafficking operation in Indonesia has been dismantled by authorities, leading to the arrest of multiple suspects and the rescue of six infants. The syndicate reportedly sold babies while still in the womb, exploiting vulnerable parents via social media to facilitate illegal adoptions.

Indonesian police have successfully dismantled a disturbing international baby trafficking syndicate that has allegedly sold at least 25 infants to buyers in Singapore since the beginning of 2023. In a recent operation spanning the cities of Pontianak and Tangerang, authorities arrested 13 individuals linked to the trafficking ring and rescued six babies, reportedly all around one year old, who were on the verge of being trafficked.

According to Surawan, West Java’s Director of General Criminal Investigation, babies were housed in Pontianak where their immigration documents were arranged before being smuggled into Singapore. He revealed that some babies had been "reserved while still in the womb" and, upon birth, were promptly taken after the delivery expenses and compensation for the birth mother were settled.

The syndicate's tactics involved targeting parents or soon-to-be mothers reluctant to keep their children, often reaching out through social media platforms such as Facebook before transitioning to more private communication like WhatsApp. Surawan noted that after the mothers relinquished their babies, the infants were placed with caretakers for a period of two to three months while fraudulent civil documents, including family cards and passports, were prepared for them.

The cost of these transactions ranged from 11 million Indonesian rupiah ($673; £502) to 16 million rupiah per child, with reports indicating that the victims included 12 male and 13 female infants from various districts in West Java. A pressing objective for the police is identifying the adopters in Singapore, with authorities working on cross-referencing the data of those who departed Indonesia.

Surawan commented that, thus far, none of the babies were taken through kidnapping, with families allegedly agreeing to sell their children due to financial distress. There lies potential legal culpability for parents involved in these exchanges if it is determined that they had colluded with traffickers.

In efforts to combat the pervasive issue, Indonesian police have sought assistance from Interpol and their Singapore counterparts to apprehend other members of the syndicate still at large, including buyers. These operations have highlighted the ongoing challenge of child trafficking, particularly among vulnerable populations in Indonesia, where illegal adoptions are frequently disguised under the facade of compassionate programs promising support for mothers in need.

Ai Rahmayanti, commissioner of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), emphasized how trafficking syndicates often exploit women facing difficult circumstances, including unplanned pregnancies due to sexual violence or abandonment. With Indonesia's restrictive laws on abortion, these vulnerable women are left with few options, leading to increased susceptibility to trafficking schemes masked as maternity clinics or shelters.

Despite the absence of official statistics regarding illegal sales of babies in Indonesia, KPAI's own data showcases a disturbing upward trend, with cases of child abduction and trafficking related to illegal adoption escalating from 11 cases in 2020 to 59 in 2023. The recent enforcement actions underscore an urgent need for both awareness and stricter regulation against child trafficking in the region.
