Israeli Soldier Sentenced for Abusing Palestinian Detainees at Military Facility
A military court in Israel imposes a seven-month prison term on a reservist for his role in detainee mistreatment.
The Israeli military court has handed down a seven-month prison sentence to a reservist soldier after he confessed to committing aggravated abuse against Palestinian detainees at the Sde Teiman military detention center in southern Israel, located near Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the conviction, stating the soldier assaulted detainees by punching them and using his weapon while they were handcuffed and blindfolded.
These incidents reportedly occurred in front of other soldiers, some of whom urged him to cease his actions. Notably, some of the abuse was captured on the defendant’s mobile device, as noted by the IDF. According to The Haaretz newspaper, this soldier is the first to be tried for mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners captured during the ongoing war with Hamas.
The Beit Lid Military Court, which presided over the case, revealed that the soldier admitted to three counts of aggravated abuse and one count of unbecoming conduct, reached through a plea agreement with prosecutors. These incidents took place across four different occasions between January and June 2024, while he was on duty guarding trucks transporting detainees.
Reports indicated that an unidentified number of masked soldiers may have also participated in these acts of abuse. Alongside the prison sentence, the soldier received a suspended sentence and was demoted to the rank of private.
The IDF emphasized the obligation of soldiers to abide by military values and orders, particularly during times of conflict. Alarming reports have emerged regarding the treatment of detainees at the Sde Teiman facility, which was established following the onset of the Gaza conflict 15 months ago.
In July, far-right protesters entered the facility as part of a protest against military police questioning reservists implicated in more severe accusations, including rape and serious injury of a detainee. These developments come alongside concerns raised by a UN commission investigating widespread mistreatment of detainees from Gaza, with allegations of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse reported.
The Israeli government has categorically rejected the claims of systematic abuse, stating its commitment to international legal standards while asserting that every complaint is thoroughly investigated.
This recent conviction occurs against a backdrop of escalated violence following an unprecedented attack from Hamas on October 7, 2023, which resulted in significant casualties on both sides. As a result, more than 1,800 Palestinians from Gaza are currently classified as "unlawful combatants" in Israeli custody, excluding military-held detainees.
