Setting sail from Marcona on December 7, Castro's voyage began with promise but quickly turned to desperation as his supplies dwindled in the unforgiving oceanic expanse.
Despite a diligent search launched by his family following his disappearance, Peruvian maritime patrols were unable to locate him until the Ecuadorian patrol vessel Don F finally found him, alarmingly far off the coast, 680 miles from home. Severely dehydrated and in critical condition, Castro's will to survive was fueled by thoughts of his family, including a newborn granddaughter whom he had yet to meet.
Surviving on rainwater and whatever creatures he could catch, Castro turned to eating birds, cockroaches, and ultimately sea turtles.
