In a remarkable incident on Friday, an overturned truck in Whatcom County, Washington, released an estimated 250 million bees into the wild, prompting immediate warnings from local authorities. The truck, laden with roughly 70,000 pounds (31,750 kg) of active honey bee hives, flipped over near the Canadian border, leading to a swarm of stinging insects in the area.
The Whatcom County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) swiftly responded to the scene, calling in several master bee-keepers to assist in this unusual rescue operation. WCSO shared their primary goal: “to save as many bees as possible.” The area surrounding the crash site has been cordoned off, with officials stating it will remain closed until the bees are safely restored to their hives.
In a social media alert, the sheriff's office urged residents: “AVOID THE AREA due to the potential of bees escaping and swarming.” The bee-keepers worked in conjunction with law enforcement to reset the box hives, creating a conducive environment for the bees to re-hive and locate their queen. WCSO has indicated that this process is expected to unfold over the next 24 to 48 hours.
As the situation developed, local authorities expressed gratitude for the “wonderful community of bee-keepers,” noting that over two dozen professionals arrived to support rescue efforts. By morning, WCSO anticipated that most bees would have returned to their hives, minimizing potential risks to the public.
