In brief
In a candid moment, Prince William shares how the cancer diagnoses of his wife and father have impacted him personally while expressing pride in their resilience.
Prince William has openly discussed the emotional toll that the recent dual cancer diagnoses of his wife, Catherine, and his father, King Charles III, had on him during a trip to South Africa. The poignant remarks came as he wrapped up a four-day visit to the country to host the Earthshot Prize, an environmental initiative he founded in 2020.In comments reported by the BBC, Prince William described the past year as “dreadful” and “probably the hardest year in my life.” He candidly admitted that balancing his family’s health crises and other responsibilities has been “really difficult.” The 41-year-old prince expressed his admiration for both Catherine and King Charles, stating, “I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it’s been brutal.”The royal family's challenges became public knowledge earlier this year; in February, Buckingham Palace revealed King Charles's cancer diagnosis shortly after his ascension to the throne. Subsequently, in March, it was disclosed that Catherine had also been diagnosed with cancer following her abdominal surgery in January. The family has requested privacy regarding the specific types of cancer.William’s reflection recalls his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who in 1992 referred to a particularly tumultuous year as her “annus horribilis,” highlighting the personal and public challenges faced by the royal family. On a brighter note, recent days have seen progress, as King Charles resumed public engagements in April, and Catherine has returned to her royal duties. In September, she shared that she had completed her chemotherapy and was focusing on remaining cancer-free. Prince William also noted that Catherine has been “amazing this whole year” and is currently doing “really well.”
