In brief
Mittens, an eight-year-old Maine Coon, unintentionally traveled back and forth between New Zealand and Australia due to an oversight during her owner’s journey. The incident began when the cat was scheduled to fly from Christchurch to Melbourne on January 12. However, her cage remained in the cargo hold when ground staff mistakenly left her behind on the plane.
When her owner, Margo Neas, arrived in Melbourne and couldn’t find Mittens, she was informed that the plane had returned to New Zealand with her pet still on board. Ground staff quickly located the missing cat after a few anxious hours, revealing that she was en route back to Christchurch on the return flight. The pilot was notified to ensure the cargo hold was heated, keeping Mittens comfortable during the trip. Despite losing some weight, Mittens emerged from the ordeal unharmed and was promptly flown back to Melbourne to be reunited with Neas. She expressed her relief upon seeing her beloved pet, recalling how Mittens rushed into her arms for a heartfelt reunion. Neas explained that the incident was not the ideal start to their new life in Australia, as they had just relocated and felt incomplete without their pet.Air New Zealand is currently investigating how the mix-up occurred, suspecting that a stowed wheelchair may have blocked the view of the baggage handler who missed the cat's cage. The airline has since apologized for the emotional turmoil caused and is committed to covering all associated travel costs. Given that direct animal bookings for international flights are not allowed under airline policy, passengers must make arrangements through authorized pet carrier companies. While the one-way flight usually takes under four hours, Mittens' adventurous day surely exceeded anyone's expectations, reminding us of the unpredictable nature of air travel – and the strong bond we share with our furry companions. This enjoyable twist in travel misfortune has drawn attention to the importance of safeguarding pets during transportation and highlighted the loving, albeit tumultuous, experience of pet owners on the move.MittensAir New ZealandMelbourneChristchurchPetTravelAustralia
