In brief

A recent study of social media and online posts reveals that while many Russians express a longing for the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, they are reluctant to accept any significant concessions in peace negotiations. This tension underscores the challenges faced in crafting a peace settlement acceptable to both Moscow and Kyiv.

The Massachusetts-based analytics firm, FilterLabs, conducted the analysis, examining sentiments from major urban centers and border regions in Russia. Their findings indicate a war-weary public, yet also a prevailing notion that peace must be brokered on Russia's own terms. This complexity was reinforced through a recent conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and former U.S. President Donald Trump. They agreed to a mutual halt on attacks targeting energy infrastructure, an arrangement seen by the Trump administration as foundational to advancing towards a broader cease-fire deal. FilterLabs has tracked these evolving sentiments in Russian society since the escalation of military action by President Putin in February 2022.
