In brief

In a significant development, Russia and Iran have formalized a 20-year "strategic partnership" during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's recent visit to Moscow. This treaty encompasses multiple sectors including defense, technology, energy, and trade, reflecting both countries' intentions to deepen their alliances amid evolving geopolitical landscapes.

The agreement also reinforces Iran's role as a supplier of drones and potentially ballistic missiles to Russia. The pact outlines commitments to consult on military and security matters, participate in joint military exercises, and safeguard their territories from threats posed by external forces. Pezeshkian noted that this treaty marks a pivotal moment in Iran-Russia relations, while President Vladimir Putin highlighted prospects for boosting trade, particularly in energy. Russia is contemplating the construction of new nuclear power facilities in Iran and is eager to sell its surplus natural gas to its Iranian partner. This renewed focus on energy cooperation comes as the European Union has curtailed gas imports from Russia since the onset of the Ukraine conflict. Negotiations are also underway for a potential gas pipeline from Russia to Iran that may traverse Azerbaijan. If realized, this project could see Russia supplying as much as 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually to Iran, enhancing mutual economic interests and regional influence.
