In brief
Residents of Gaza are grappling with a deepening crisis as the United Nations halts operations at local bakeries, straining the already scarce food supply and exacerbating fears of starvation.
Bilal Mohammad Ramadan AbuKresh, a 40-year-old father, exemplifies the plight of many as he struggles to provide for his four children after losing everything to the ongoing conflict. Until recently, he relied on a local bakery for bread, but now, with 25 bakeries shuttered due to lack of flour and resources, he finds himself in a dire situation. The slow lines for bread, once a semblance of order in the chaos, have transformed into frenzied competitions for dwindling supplies."The lines were unimaginable, like the Day of Judgment," Mr. AbuKresh described, illustrating the desperation felt throughout the region. The World Food Program, a U.N. agency, reported that its resources have been depleted, leading to skyrocketing prices for basic necessities— with a recent bag of pasta costing an astonishing $30. In an act of desperation, families are forced to sell personal possessions, including children's jewelry, or forage for scrap materials to exchange for food."We are living on the edge, and I risk my life just to secure a bag of bread for my children," said Mr. AbuKresh. As aid deliveries remain critically low, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, demanding urgent international attention and support.
