In brief

Tensions escalate as Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza faces evacuation amid a surge of Israeli airstrikes, resulting in numerous casualties among medical staff and patients.

In a recent development, the Israeli military has forcibly evacuated Kamal Adwan hospital, cited as one of the last operational healthcare facilities in northern Gaza. Medics report that this drastic action follows a series of Israeli airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of dozens, including medical personnel, in the vicinity of the hospital. According to Eid Sabbah, the head of nursing at the facility, the Israeli military informed the hospital administration that they had just 15 minutes to evacuate remaining patients and staff. Shortly thereafter, troops entered the facility to assist in the evacuation process. The military claimed that this operation was part of their broader strategy to target what they described as a "Hamas terrorist stronghold" in the area. They also stated that efforts were made to facilitate the safe evacuation of all civilians, patients, and staff prior to commencing their operations. Nevertheless, the military's communications did not disclose the destination for the evacuated patients, though an earlier statement indicated intentions to relocate them to a nearby hospital that had been previously evacuated by the military itself. The urgency of the evacuation is underscored by concerns regarding critically ill patients, particularly those in intensive care who are reliant on ventilation support. Dr. Sabbah expressed worries about the risks involved in relocating these vulnerable patients without specialized medical transportation. In the hours preceding the evacuation order, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the hospital's director, reported that approximately 50 individuals, including five hospital staff, were killed in the ongoing airstrikes targeting the area. This report highlighted that victims included a pediatrician and a laboratory technician, both of whom were struck while in close proximity to the hospital during attacks on surrounding buildings.Despite the dire situation, the Israeli military has stated that they were previously unaware of any strikes in the area of Kamal Adwan hospital and are investigating reports regarding the fatalities among staff members. The hospital in Beit Lahia has faced increasing pressure and a blockade since the escalation of military actions against Hamas beginning in October, leaving an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 civilians trapped in a region experiencing severe restrictions on humanitarian aid.The United Nations has warned of an overwhelming humanitarian crisis as aid efforts have met systematic delays and obstructions imposed by the Israeli military. Hospital administrators have made urgent calls for protection against ongoing threats as the facility increasingly becomes a target of military strikes.
