In brief

The last operating intensive care unit in northern Gaza suffers heavy damage from Israeli attacks, prompting calls for humanitarian intervention to provide essential medical supplies and support for a besieged healthcare system.

In the midst of ongoing violence in northern Gaza, the last functioning intensive care unit at Kamal Adwan Hospital has been critically affected by Israeli shelling this week. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the hospital's director, reported that an Israeli tank shell struck the facility in Jabaliya, igniting a fire and causing irreversible harm to the unit, which has been treating both children and adults.Despite the hospital staff's claims, the Israeli military stated they were unaware of any strikes targeting the intensive care unit and are investigating potential nearby conflict. Previously, Israel has alleged that Hamas utilizes the hospital for military operations, a claim vehemently denied by medical personnel and Gaza health officials.Desperate for help, Dr. Abu Safiya and his team have called upon the international community for the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to allow crucial medical supplies and equipment to enter the besieged facility. "We urgently need repairs related to water and oxygen supplies," he lamented, emphasizing the dire situation that has persisted for over 75 days amidst ongoing military offensives in the area. The situation worsened on what Dr. Abu Safiya labeled one of the darkest days for the hospital. With continuous bombardment surrounding the compound, the staff was forced to evacuate patients when tank shells caused a significant fire in the intensive care unit. "We have been addressing the world for over 75 days, and yet nothing is being done," he expressed in a previous statement, highlighting the urgent plea for mercy amidst escalating hostilities.
